Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr.
(born June 20, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer
who has sold more than 100 million records. A star tennis player in Joliet, he accepted a tennis scholarship back at Tuskegee Institute and later graduated with a major in economics. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Tuskegee, Richie briefly attended graduate school at Auburn University. Whilst a freshmen at Tuskegee Institute he became the lead singer and saxophonist with the R&B group, The Commodores, an American funk/soul band of the 1970s and 1980s. The members of the group met as freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for The Jackson 5 while on tour. The Commodores have sold over 75 million records worldwide. He released his solo
self-titled debut album in 1982, which contained three hit singles. His
solo career propelled him into being one of the most successful
balladeers of the 1980s. He has won two Grammy Awards including Album Of
