Skipper said I'll race you to the levee 

gonna beat you down to New Orleans
He said I've got a paddle wheeler 

that'll beat the Mississippi Delta Queen
Bayou people gonna line up on the river 

gonna come from miles to see
The fastest boat on the Mighty Mississippi
My good ship the Robert E Lee
Captain said Uh uh
There ain't nothing faster 

from Memphis to New Orleans
He said Uh uh
There ain't a Finer lady 

than the Mississippi Delta Queen
Skipper said we'll Start in St Louis
The Captain said fine with me
The Skipper said it all be over 

before we reach Tennessee
But One mile out on that foggy foggy morning 

you look towards new Orlean
And way up front was the paddlewheel 

churnin' on the Mississippi Delta Queen
Two miles south of Naches Mississippi 

the Robert E Lee ran aground
The Skipper said I'll have to go with her 

if the Robert E Lee goes down
Now the Mississippi River ain't no place 

to be on a cold & foggy morn
But above all the screamin' & cries of doom 

came the sound of a paddle wheel horn
Someone cried look up the Mississippi 

I think I see the crown of the Queen
I do believe we'll all be saved 

by the Mississippi Delta Queen
Skipper said Uh ha look up the Mississippi 

the finest sight I've ever seen
He said Uh ha there ain't a finer lady 

than the Mississippi Delta Queen
The Captain propped the queen behind Robert 

and pushed him into to New Orleans
The people cheered the first one into the levee 

was the good ship Robert E Lee
The mayor said it looks like the winner 

of the race is the Robert E Lee
But the skipper cried hold on 

the real winner is the Mississippi Delta Queen
He said I'd like to steal it
Cause there ain't a paddlewheeler
